Prewriting is the first stage of the process approach to writing. Many people either do their writing without much premeditation or are unaware of their pre-writing processes and the benefits of these practices. Prewriting consists of four main steps: choosing a topic, considering a purpose, identifying the audience, and gathering and organizing ideas (Schweiker-Marra 102). It is somewhat you are planning or outlining before you will write your final output. Effective prewriting makes the rest of the writing process easier and less stressful. If you develop a plan before you start writing, your writing will start with a purpose and a structure. The more time and effort you put into prewriting, the less time you will have to spend on the rest of the writing process. Prewriting teaches organizational skills. It teaches students how to apply thinking, planning, and organizing skills to other learning tasks. Acquiring these skills reduces anxiety, not only from writing, but from all testing in general. Pre-writing facilitates the process of writing because it allows us to think more concretely about our assignment or topic.
Writing is not a ubiquitous process. It doesn’t follow a certain format for everyone, but often we are taught we have a prompt or assignment and then we must complete the assignment following those guidelines. However, sometimes we struggle with certain assignments because we have no idea where to begin. The question then becomes, “how do I start this assignment and how can this process be improved upon?” The short answer is pre-writing. Pre-writing gives us freedom to think, change ideas and see the mistake/s. It is very a big help to the writers or even students when they are making their essay, reflection, etc. because it gives them enough time to plan and think what is the best content for their output. It helps writers or students develop clear reasoning, map, plan, or brainstorm about their writing before beginning a first draft to organize their thoughts, so that they can organize them effectively for their audience because an organize thought can facilitate a better understanding of audience and rhetorical situation. Pre-writing is somewhat giving the best that you can.
Prewriting activities can save you a lot of stress. If you haven't had much success with prewriting in the past, don't worry. There are a lot of prewriting techniques. Experiment with them a bit, personalize them, and you're bound to find a strategy that works for you. Pre writing is arguably the most important. This is because students need to learn how to approach an essay topic, and how to produce a flow of ideas. The key to prewriting is finding the method that suits you best. Prewriting is one of the most important parts of submitting a successful piece of writing. Try them all, because all of them are helpful and really gives you a best output. The more you think and explore, the more you will learn and realize.
